If You Want Something Bad Enough You Need To Go Out And Fight For It

That’s actually a paraphrase of the Les Brown poem ‘Be Hungry (Fight For It)’ that this video is about.

When I first came across Les Brown and the ‘Be Hungry (Fight For It)’ poem, it reminded me of a job I once had back in the early ’90’s.

It was at a small computer company that put together their own IBM compatible Servers & PC’s. They would sell them as ready made network solutions to small and medium sized businesses that were looking for affordable PC networks.

The boss came from a computer sales background and I was part of the technical team responsible for installation, repair & support.

All the techy guys got on OK with the boss and I guess that was because he knew that our knowledge was crucial for him to win the lucrative deals in the early days of PC networks.

However, his relationship with the sales guys was rather different and he was quite ruthless with them. I remember him saying one day that sales were down and it was because the sales guys “..are not hungry enough. They have to be so hungry and want the sale bad enough, that they will fight to get it..”

So he fired some guys who were under-performing and raised the monthly target for the others.

I just wonder, that if he’d known about Les Brown back then, whether he would have adopted a more motivational style towards his sales guys…..

Enjoy the Video.

Be Hungry (Fight For It)

If you want a thing bad enough to go out and fight for it,
to work day and night for it,
to give up your time, your peace and sleep for it…
if all that you dream and scheme is about it,
…and life seems useless and worthless without it…
if you gladly sweat for it and fret for it and plan for it and lose all your terrror of the opposition for it…
if you simply go after that thing that you want with all your capacity, strength and sagacity,
faith hope and confidence and stern pertinacity…
if neither cold, poverty, famine, nor gout, sickness nor pain, of body and brain, can keep you away from the thing that you want…
if dogged and grim you beseech and beset it,
with the help of God, YOU WILL GET IT!
– Les Brown
